Every four years we have the privilege and the responsibility to elect our representatives to the General and Jurisdictional Conferences.

Take some time to learn about the nominees here: Clergy Nominees and Laity Nominees before the Annual Conference session. As part of managing costs, we will not have booklets with the detailed nominee information printed; only summary information will be printed and made available on the tables during the session.

Rev. Brian Oliver describes the process of electing lay and clergy delegates to represent the Iowa Annual Conference at the 2020 General and Jurisdictional Conferences of The United Methodist Church.

In 2016 the General Conference made some changes to the election procedures and in 2018 our Iowa Annual Conference approved changes in the Rules of Order to comply with the new procedures.

Notes to consider (some of these are different from prior voting procedures)

  • General Conference and Jurisdictional Conference delegates will be elected on the same ballot so votes will be for all the delegates that need to be elected. Starting with votes for 12 delegates and continuing each ballot with the number of votes based on the number of delegates that need to be elected.
  • Clergy and lay delegates ballots are separate.
  • We will elect six Iowa clergy and six lay delegates for the 2020 General Conference.
  • Six additional clergy delegates and six additional lay delegates will be elected to serve at the North Central Jurisdictional Conference.
  • Additional nominations may be submitted on the floor of Annual Conference on Saturday. These nominations must be hand-delivered to the Conference Secretary before 4:00pm on Saturday, June 8th, 2019.
  • Nominees that wish to remove themselves from consideration must do so in writing and hand-deliver the signed notification to the Conference Secretary at least 10 minutes before the voting on the next ballot starts.
