Eight churches were slated for closing in the Iowa Annual Conference this past year. The churches were commemorated on Monday at the 2019 Annual Conference Session. 

The churches’ respective District Superintendents read the proclamations for each church, listed with specifics below:

Marion, Living Water United Methodist Church, founded in 1997, to close effective June 23, 2019, transfer membership to Cedar Rapids, Kenwood Park United Methodist Church, and the property be transferred to the Trustees of Iowa Annual Conference.

Little Cedar United Methodist Church, founded in 1869, to close effective July 1, 2019, transfer membership to St Ansgar United Methodist Church, and property be transferred to the Trustees of Iowa Annual Conference.  

Ottumwa, First United Methodist Church, founded in 1843, to close effective July 1, 2019, transfer membership to Grace Fellowship a Congregation of The United Methodist Church, and the property be transferred to the Trustees of Iowa Annual Conference.

Ottumwa, Wesley United Methodist Church, founded in 1868, to close effective July 1, 2019, and transfer membership to Grace Fellowship a Congregation of The United Methodist Church, and the property be transferred to the Trustees of Iowa Annual Conference.

Ottumwa, Willard Street Church, founded in 1888, be closed effective July 1, 2019, transfer of membership to Grace Fellowship a Congregation of The United Methodist Church, and the property be transferred to the Trustees of Iowa Annual Conference.

Noble United Methodist Church, founded in 1875, to close effective December 31, 2018, transfer membership to Grant United Methodist Church and the property be transferred to the Trustees of Iowa Annual Conference.

Sharpsburg United Methodist Church, founded in 1886, to close effective January 27, 2019, and transfer membership to Lenox United Methodist Church, and the property be transferred to the Trustees of Iowa Annual Conference.

Yale United Methodist Church, founded in 1885, to close effective December 19, 2018, transfer membership to Hope Parish United Methodist Church in Bayard, and the property be transferred to the Trustees of Iowa Annual Conference.

Property Matter – Resolution for the Closing of the Ottumwa, First United Methodist Church

WHEREAS the Ottumwa, First United Methodist Church located in Wapello County was founded in 1843 and has a long and proud history; and

WHEREAS the church conference of the Ottumwa, First United Methodist Church voted on December 12, 2018, to close the church; and

WHEREAS the district superintendent, in consultation with the local church, has recommended the closing of the Ottumwa, First United Methodist Church and transfer of membership to Grace Fellowship a Congregation of The United Methodist Church; and

WHEREAS the superintendent, in consultation with the local church, has recommended that the property be sold.

WHEREAS the consent to close has been granted by the presiding bishop, a majority of the district superintendents, and the district board of church location and building; and all proper Disciplinary requirements have been complied with;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ottumwa, First United Methodist Church be closed effective July 1, 2019, and the property be transferred to the Trustees of Iowa Annual Conference.

 Property Matter – Resolution for the Closing of the Ottumwa, Wesley United Methodist Church

WHEREAS the Ottumwa, Wesley United Methodist Church located in Wapello County was founded in 1868 and has a long and proud history; and

WHEREAS the church conference of the Ottumwa, Wesley United Methodist Church voted on December 11, 2018, to close the church; and

WHEREAS the district superintendent, in consultation with the local church, has recommended the closing of the Ottumwa, Wesley United Methodist Church and transfer of membership to Grace Fellowship a Congregation of The United Methodist Church; and

WHEREAS the superintendent, in consultation with the local church, has recommended that the property be sold.

WHEREAS the consent to close has been granted by the presiding bishop, a majority of the district superintendents, and the district board of church location and building; and all proper Disciplinary requirements have been complied with;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ottumwa, Wesley United Methodist Church be closed effective July 1, 2019, and the property be transferred to the Trustees of Iowa Annual Conference.

WHEREAS the Ottumwa, Willard Street United Methodist Church located in Wapello County was founded in 1888 and has a long and proud history; and

WHEREAS the church conference of the Ottumwa, Willard Street Church voted on December 11, 2018, to close the church; and

WHEREAS the district superintendent, in consultation with the local church, has recommended the closing of the Ottumwa, Willard Street Church and transfer of membership to Grace Fellowship a Congregation of The United Methodist Church; and

WHEREAS the superintendent, in consultation with the local church, has recommended that the property be sold.

WHEREAS the consent to close has been granted by the presiding bishop, a majority of the district superintendents, and the district board of church location and building; and all proper Disciplinary requirements have been complied with;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ottumwa, Willard Street United Methodist Church be closed effective July 1, 2019, and the property be transferred to Grace Fellowship.

Property Matter – Resolution for the Closing of the Little Cedar United Methodist Church

WHEREAS the Little Cedar United Methodist Church located in Mitchell County was founded in 1869 and has a long and proud history; and

WHEREAS the church conference of the Little Cedar United Methodist Church voted on April 10, 2019 to close the church; and

WHEREAS the district superintendent, in consultation with the local church, has recommended the closing of the Little Cedar United Methodist Church and transfer of membership to St Ansgar United Methodist Church; and

WHEREAS the superintendent, in consultation with the local church, has recommended that the property be sold.

WHEREAS the consent to close has been granted by the presiding bishop, a majority of the district superintendents, and the district board of church location and building; and all proper Disciplinary requirements have been complied with;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Little Cedar United Methodist Church be closed effective July 1, 2019, and the property be transferred to the Trustees of Iowa Annual Conference.

Property Matter – Resolution for the Closing of the Marion, Living Water United Methodist Church

WHEREAS the Marion, Living Water United Methodist Church located in Linn County was founded in 1997 and has a long and proud history; and

WHEREAS the church conference of the Marion, Living Water United Methodist Church voted on April 7, 2019, to close the church; and

WHEREAS the district superintendent, in consultation with the local church, has recommended the closing of the Marion, Living Water United Methodist Church and transfer of membership to Cedar Rapids, Kenwood Park United Methodist Church; and

WHEREAS the superintendent, in consultation with the local church, has recommended that the property be sold.

WHEREAS the consent to close has been granted by the presiding bishop, a majority of the district superintendents, and the district board of church location and building; and all proper Disciplinary requirements have been complied with;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Marion, Living Water United Methodist Church be closed effective June 23, 2019, and the property be transferred to the Trustees of Iowa Annual Conference.

Property Matter – Resolution for the Closing of the Noble United Methodist Church

WHEREAS the Noble United Methodist Church located in Cass County was founded in 1875 and has a long and proud history; and

WHEREAS the church conference of the Noble United Methodist Church voted on November 5, 2018, to close the church; and

WHEREAS the district superintendent, in consultation with the local church, has recommended the closing of the Noble United Methodist Church and transfer of membership to Grant United Methodist Church; and

WHEREAS the superintendent, in consultation with the local church, has recommended that the property be sold.

WHEREAS the consent to close has been granted by the presiding bishop, a majority of the district superintendents, and the district board of church location and building; and all proper Disciplinary requirements have been complied with;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Noble United Methodist Church be closed effective December 31, 2018, and the property be transferred to the Trustees of Iowa Annual Conference.

WHEREAS the Sharpsburg United Methodist Church located in Taylor County was founded in 1886 and has a long and proud history; and

WHEREAS the church conference of the Sharpsburg United Methodist Church voted on January 27, 2019, to close the church; and

WHEREAS the district superintendent, in consultation with the local church, has recommended the closing of the Sharpsburg United Methodist Church and transfer of membership to Lenox United Methodist Church; and

WHEREAS the superintendent, in consultation with the local church, has recommended that the property be sold.

WHEREAS the consent to close has been granted by the presiding bishop, a majority of the district superintendents, and the district board of church location and building; and all proper Disciplinary requirements have been complied with;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Sharpsburg United Methodist Church be closed effective January 27, 2019, and the property be transferred to the Trustees of Iowa Annual Conference.

WHEREAS the Yale United Methodist Church located in Guthrie County was founded in 1885 and has a long and proud history; and

WHEREAS the church conference of the Yale United Methodist Church voted on December 19, 2018, to close the church; and

WHEREAS the district superintendent, in consultation with the local church, has recommended the closing of the Yale United Methodist Church and transfer of membership to Hope Parish United Methodist Church in Bayard; and

WHEREAS the superintendent, in consultation with the local church, has recommended that the property be sold.

WHEREAS the consent to close has been granted by the presiding bishop, a majority of the district superintendents, and the district board of church location and building; and all proper Disciplinary requirements have been complied with;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Yale United Methodist Church be closed effective December 19, 2018, and the property be transferred to the Trustees of Iowa Annual Conference.
